What's happening on the farm


This is just a few snap shots of what is happening down on the farm over the next few weeks.

Asparagus – This year we have big expectations for our asparagus crop, the old plantation has been grubbed and we will be cutting the whole of the new plantation. Due to high demand we also added another one acre to run along side the existing crop this should also yield half a crop this year. The variety we have gone for is Gijnlim which has been tried and tested on our sandy soil over the years. We hope to start harvesting Mid – Late April weather depending.

Luckily we have some of our strawberries on a bag system, which means that we are able to plant in all weathers. We have now started to irrigate the plants as they have started to grow. We are trialling a few new varieties such as Malwina, Malling Centenary and Vibrant. All of these are grown for their flavour and should taste delicious when the season arrives. Every three years we re-plant our main outdoor crop, this year we have again gone for the very flavoursome variety Florence which produces a large deep red coloured fruit.

Gooseberries/Black & Red Currants
We have planted two new plots of gooseberries to keep up with the ever high demand for this popular fruit. For both plots we have gone with the variety Invicta which we feel is the best quality gooseberry. Also to take over from the old crop in a couple of years we have planted more rows of black and red currants. These should all have a crop off them this year.

With regard to the Pick Your Own crop in the Well Field we have added a new variety called Octavia, this should be available throughout the summer holidays. The Far Field which we harvest for the ready picked crop has nearly all been replanted. The varieties we have used should see the season through so we are picking fresh from June – end of August.

There will be plenty of recipe ideas in the shop if you want to be adventurous with what you pick. As always the bakery and the kitchen will be serving up various delights using our own produce starting with asparagus.
