What’s happening down on the farm June 2017

June is a month where we farmers are watching our hard work come to fruition. We have cared and nurtured our crops over the last nine months and have had some learnings this year but then we have had great successes as well. We are finding it very satisfying seeing our produce being enjoyed so much and seeing wonderful food being created from it.

Asparagus
We have had a great season so far, the quality of the Asparagus has been some of the best we have ever grown. We have loads of ideas on how to cook it and also the cafe will be showcasing Asparagus specials throughout the season.

Strawberries
At last we have our own strawberries which we are harvesting daily from the Far Field. We have six different varieties which enable us to keep picking way into September. The quality of the strawberries seems to be good as well and we should have some great deals on when the season is in full swing.

The first crop of PYO strawberries were ready last weekend – but by the end of the weekend they had all been picked. The new crop is now ready but please keep an eye on Twitter and Facebook for regular updates regarding availability.

Raspberries
These look like they will be ready end of June weather permitting. We grow four varieties of raspberries which keep us going throughout the summer months and then well into September.

Gooseberries
We have two new young plantations this year from which we will start to get a small crop. These are also available for PYO and we have ready picked in the shop for those who simply want to buy and cook with them.

Pulling Peas and Broad Beans
These are looking to be a very good crop, again keep an eye out in the shop as these will be ready in the next few weeks.

You will also see that the Well Field (next to the car park) has now been planted up with our Pumpkins ready for the PYO Halloween season starting beginning of October. Please visit www.theballoontree.co.uk/TWITTER/Facebook for all the up to date info you need as to what is happening with all our crops.
