The asparagus season usually starts mid April when the milder weather warms up the sandy soil. We also grow some in polytunnels, which is ready early because it is protected from frosts and adverse weather. We harvest asparagus every day, trimming it to size and bunching it to go in the shop in the morning. When asparagus is really at its peak, it has to be cut twice a day as it grows twice as fast! We have a short season with this vegetable and usually finish harvesting in June to preserve the energy in the plant for the following year. We planted another 2 acres of asparagus in the Far Field of brand new crowns in February 2013. This is to keep up with the extra demand and will replace the original crop, which is now coming up to its 13th year of production. Look out for our asparagus themed specials in the shop and café.
